Attendance
At Harvills Hawthorn, we believe that good attendance is the foundation for successful learning and personal development. When children attend school regularly, they benefit from consistent teaching, build stronger friendships and develop routines that support lifelong learning. Missing even a few days can disrupt progress and make it harder to keep up with learning.
Our attendance target is 96% and we work hard to help every child reach it. Leading this important work is Mrs. Marsden, our Senior Attendance Champion, who supports families, monitors attendance patterns and celebrates improvements across the school. Together, we aim to create a positive culture where being in school every day is valued, encouraged and rewarded—because every day really does count.
We understand that maintaining good attendance can sometimes be challenging for families and we’re here to help. Michelle Hellend - our dedicated Family Support Worker - plays a key role in supporting children and families to overcome barriers to regular school attendance. Whether it's advice, practical help or simply someone to talk to, Michelle works closely with parents to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive through consistent school attendance. If you feel you may benefit from support, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office—we’re always happy to help.
Our commitment to excellent attendance is strengthened by the involvement of our school governors. Kit Salmon, one of our dedicated governors, works closely with Mrs. Marsden, to monitor attendance trends and support initiatives that encourage regular school attendance.
As a school we aim to:
- Achieve an attendance rate of 96% or above.
- Maintain parents’ and pupils’ awareness of the importance of regular attendance and punctuality.
- Reduce the percentage of persistent absenteeism.
Good attendance is important because:
Statistics show a direct link between under-achievement and poor attendance
Regular attenders make better progress, both socially and academically
Regular attenders find school routines and school work easier to cope with
Regular attenders find learning more satisfying
Regular attenders have an easier transfer to secondary school
